Prayer for Illness
Guidance for praying when you or someone you love is sick or recovering.
Bringing Sickness Before God
Illness is frightening and exhausting — whether it is your own or someone you love. Prayer does not guarantee a specific outcome, but it does mean you are not facing it alone. You can bring your fears, your pain, and your hopes to God.
What You Can Pray For
Consider praying for:
- Healing — asking God to restore health in body, mind, and spirit.
- Comfort — for relief from pain and fear.
- Strength — for the endurance to face each day.
- Wisdom — for doctors, nurses, and caregivers making decisions.
- Peace — for the person who is ill and for their family.
Honest Prayers
It is okay to ask God for healing. It is also okay to acknowledge fear and uncertainty. God welcomes every kind of prayer — bold requests and quiet pleas alike.
Prayer does not replace medical care. Seeking treatment is wise and faithful. God works through doctors, medicine, and the care of others.
A Simple Prayer
Lord, I bring ___ before You. You know their body, their mind, and their pain. Please bring healing and comfort. Give wisdom to those caring for them. Strengthen them for today, and surround them with Your peace. Help us to trust You, whatever the outcome. In Jesus' name, Amen.
You matter, and help is available.
